His earliest musical influence was the legend Elvis Presley and he even learned to play the guitar around the age of nine. He always knew that he had a passion for music, but he was not sure how he would make his dreams come true. McCreery was only 17 at the time of his audition and was one of the youngest contestants on the show. However, his age did not hold him back and his musical abilities were able to shine through and help him win the crown.
After American Idol
American Idol was not the end of Scotty’s career at all and was simply the beginning. He released a single for his coronation song “I Love You This Big” right after he won the 10th season of the competition. The song became popular right away and started at number 32 on the billboard charts before reaching its peak at 18. It even became the highest debut single on the chart at the time. After the success of his single, McCreery signed a record deal with Mercury Nashville and began recording his very first album.

Phillip Phillips has always had a love for music that inspired him. He began learning to play guitar at the age of 14 and even formed his own band in 2009 with his brother in law Benjamin Neil. He won a few local singing competitions before he decided to take things to the next level by auditioning for American Idol. His fondness of bands like Mumford and Sons and Tool are what inspire is musical voice. Philip actually auditioned for America’s Got Talent before American Idol, but did not make the cut.
American Idol Audition
Phillip Phillip’s American Idol audition featured him serenading the judge with his own version of “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder. He was then asked to perform a second song with his guitar and sang “Thriller” by Michael Jackson. This audition got him a place in Hollywood and he never looked back.
American Idol performances can be incredibly grueling, but Philip was also dealing with a serious medical condition. During the top 13 performances not on the television show, Phillip Phillips had to be taken to the hospital for kidney stones. During his time on American Idol, Phillip had at least 8 procedures and even contemplated quitting due to the pain he was feeling. However, he stuck it out and was rewarded in the end when he won the 11th season of Idol.
Coronation Song Sales
Every American Idol gets the chance to record their own song and sing it if they win the competition. Phillip ended up winning season 11 of Idol and sang his coronation son “Home.” The sales for this song quickly skyrocketed and it led to the largest digital sales week for any Idol winner’s coronation song. Phillip Phillips was a star from the first moment that he graced the stage and his sales only cemented his talent and place in the music industry.

Her rise to fame and success was not always easy and she dealt with her fair share of bumps along the way.
Candice Glover was born in Beaufort, South Carolina to her dotting parents John and Caroline. She has six brothers and sisters, but is the oldest of the bunch. She graduated from high school in 2008, but always had doubts about her dreams to be a singer due to her struggles with weight. However, she finally built up the strength and decided to give her musical aspirations a try by auditioning for American Idol
Third Times the Charm
Candice Glover may have the voice of an angel, but it took the judges a few tries before they totally believed in her potential. Glover actually became the first American Idol contestant ever to try out 3 times before making it to the live shows. This showed her dedication and how much perseverance she truly has to keep trying no matter what. She never became afraid of the failure and simply wanted to improve and have a chance to capture the American Idol crown. She was wrongly labeled as a lounge singer, but eventually was able to show her true musical range and unleash her inspirational voice.
Season 12 Difference
When Glover auditioned for the 3rd time in the 11th season of American Idol, you could just tell that there was difference in her voice. She sang “Syrup and Honey” by Duffy and wowed the judges immediately. She even got a standing ovation and was told that she had the best voice heard all day. She joined the American Idol tour during that summer and began to promote her album. Sales for her debut album were steady, but there is still a lot of room for her sound to grow. She has R&B and hip hop soul in her voice that can really propel her to success. Her second album has not been released yet, but Candice Glover is feverishly working to perfect her sound. The sky is the limit for her career due to her amazing vocal range and talent.
Caleb Johnson is an American Idol winner that felt his share of failure before he won the ultimate prize. He actually auditioned for the hit show two times before he finally made it to Hollywood and made an impression on the judges. When he finally broke through on his audition, Johnson was singing an original song that he wrote himself entitled “Into the Void.”
What Songs Made an Impression?
Once Caleb Johnson finally made it into the top 13 he wasted no time making an impression on the public. The songs that seemed to have the most impact on viewers of American Idol included “Skyfall” by Adele and “Working Man” by Rush. When Caleb finally broke through and won American Idol he became the third contestant from North Carolina to hold this title. The other two contestants from this region include Fantasia Barrino and Scotty McCreery.
Where is He Now?
Winning American Idol can throw your life into a bit of a tailspin. You get instant fame and have the ability to start living your dreams right away. Caleb Johnson has taken full advantage of his newfound fame and success. He toured with the rest of the American Idol contestants in 2014 for a sold out tour that started in Birmingham, NY. This allowed him to pursue his dream of entertaining audiences across the globe with his voice. His debut album was released on August 22, 2014 and he even got the chance to sing the National Anthem at the Memorial Day Concert hosted in Washington, DC. When runner-up Jenna Irene had to pick her prom date, she chose Caleb Johnson and he accompanied her to her high school prom in Farmington Hills, MI. His success is coming fast, but Johnson is dedicated to having a long career and taking advantage of his American Idol fame.
Feud with David Cook
Caleb Johnson might normally make the news for all the right reasons, but lately a feud with David Cook has been tabloid fodder. Johns has a unique rocker style that does not always fare well on the American Idol stage, so his success in the competition was a bit of a surprise. In an August interview Johnson claimed that he was the first real rocker to win American Idol, which did not please season 7 winner David Cook. Caleb Johnson claimed that since Cook never sang songs by classic rock bands on the show he could not be known as a real rocker.
David Cook took pop hits and turned them into rocker ballads with his unique skill, but he did not sing a lot of Zeppelin songs or other iconic rock tunes. Cook never formally addressed the comments made by Caleb Johnson, but he did sing a song at his concert that was designed to send a message. This might not be a full-fledged feud, but it is Caleb Johnson’s first taste of how bright the spotlight can be and how far your words can go.
